Dalam pendahuluan buku ini, penyusun ada menyatakan “ Wajib atas setiap orang yang berakal dan sampai umur menyuci dan membersihkan hatinya daripada sifat-sifat yang tercela yang merosakkan hatinya dan menghiasinya dengan sifat-sifat yang terpuji yang menyelamatkan dirinya di dunia dan akhirat ”.
Dalam buku ini diterangkan 10 sifat hati yang keji – untuk dijauhi dan 10 sifat hati yang terpuji – untuk dihiasi hati dengannya. Berikut disenaraikan sifat-sifat tersebut;
Pengenalan Ringkas Pengajian
Buku yang berjudul “ 20 Sifat Hati; yang Keji dan Terpuji” ini merupakan karya guru saya semasa menuntut ilmu di SMA al- Ma’ahad al-Muhammadi Lelaki, Kelantan – iaitu Ust Haji Nik Abdul Kadir bin Haji Nik Muhammad (sekarang Dato’) – yang memegang jawatan Pengetua (Mudir) sekolah ketika itu. Beliau sekarang, merupakan Timbalan Mufti Kerajaan negeri Kelantan.
Dato’ Haji Nik Abdul Kadir atau biasa dikenali sebagai Ust Nik Dir ini telah menghasilkan karya beliau ini, ketika beliau menjawat jawatan pengetua di SMA al-Maahad al-Muhammadi Pasir Pekan. Buku ini telah diterbitkan dengan cetakan pertamanya pada tahun 1985 di bawah “ Siri Panduan Hidup ” oleh Jabatan Hal Ehwal Ugama Islam Negeri Kelantan. Ia diterbitkan dengan dua edisi Rumi dan Jawi.
